World War II Submarine Memorials by State July 30, 2018

Here is a list of  World War II submarine war memorials by state (in some states, it covers non-World War II submarine memorials and in other states, no submarine memorials have been established even though the goal is to establish missing World War II submarine memorials in every state): http://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/state-dc.htm. If anyone has additional information on any of these memorials, please let me know.

The above link includes all memorials known to the people who manage the website. This sub-section is only for those missing submarines that were lost in World War II – http://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/statebo.htm (it doesn’t include links to each state memorial since not each state has erected a memorial), but I hope to create a list of URLs from the main page and other sources). Good list of submarine-related losses, including the 52 submarines on “Eternal Patrol” – https://www.oneternalpatrol.com/submarine-losses.htm (includes submarine tenders and submariners who may not have died on submarines; for example, a number of submarine POWs survived the loss of their vessels, only to be captured and die in POW camps.

I can’t tell how accurate some of the information I have found is, but this site indicates that not all states have created submarine memorials and some were in the process of setting up memorials: http://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/statebo.htm. In addition, some of the memorials don’t list the names of the crews  or submarines, and a few are general missing submarine memorials.

Here’s two lists: first, a list of whole and intact submarines or submarines in the process of being restored; second is a list of submarine artifacts and it can be found at http://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/submem-1.htm.

The boat memorials listed here are placed in two groups.
CLICK the LINKS below… and don’t forget to SCROLL DOWN

*** Not all intact boats listed are “memorial boats”.
They exist…they are listed

GROUP ONE:
Sites comprised of whole and intact submarines that have been restored
or are in the process of restoration.
GROUP TWO:
Sites displaying only submarine artifacts.
WEBMASTER NOTE:  Not all of the references in GROUP TWO are about “memorials” in the accepted sense of the term.. Some refer to whatever is known about the locations of “parts of submarines” (aka artifacts). Nevertheless for anyone who served on a particular boat that is associated with a given “artifact” then that part of his submarine is important to him. … and that makes it a “memorial” of sorts. Don’t you agree?

Submarine memorials by state:

Alabama: http://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/state-a1.htm includes information on the memorial for Alabama’s assigned missing World War II submarine – USS Herring. Memorial is in Mobile, Alabama at https://www.ussalabama.com/ and includes the names of the crew.

Alaska: http://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/state-a2.htm – no information in link USS S-26 is Alaska’s assigned missing World War II submarine – USS S-26. Doesn’t appear a missing submarine memorial has been created in the state yet.

Arizona: http://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/state-a3.htm; includes Arizona’s assigned missing World War II submarine, USS Perch. Only mentions names of the few survivors who died in a P.O.W. (Prisoner of War) camp.

Arkansashttp://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/state-a4.htm; includes the assigned missing World War II submarine for Arkansas, USS Snook. It has a number of reference slabs surrounding the memorial, but can’t tell if any of them include crew names as the number of photos in the link don’t equal the number of slabs. It does include the names of the missing submarines from World War II.

California (assigned two missing World War II submarines): http://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/state-c1.htm; includes the two assigned missing World War II submarines for California – USS Argonaut and USS Grampus; direct link to more information on the two submarines: http://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/sanlen.htm – the second link (sanlen one) has a list of the crew names for both missing submarines.

The Ballast Point memorial has the following as well as some other interesting items:

One marble obelisk has a large plaque honoring all the WWII boats on Eternal Patrol. The other has individual plaques for the loss of either the following boats and/or their crewmembers:

F-1 F-4 G-2
H-1  O-5  O-9

Connecticut: http://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/state-c3.htm; doesn’t appear to include information on the assigned missing World War II submarine for Connecticut –  USS Triton (SS-201 – as there is a newer Triton memorial for a different submarine of the same name). Kansas: http://militaryhonors.sid-hill.us/mem/state-k1.htm: it does include information, including names of the crew, on the assigned missing World War II submarine for USS Dorado. I am not sure if I still have photos from this memorial as a computer hard drive crash may have caused their loss. I will work on getting photos for this memorial if I can’t find the ones I took. The memorial is in Wichita and you can learn more about it at http://vmpwi.org/.
