MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — The public is invited to attend a “March for Unity and Respect” on the Treasure Coast this weekend.

Martin County community leaders organized the event as a means of promoting unity and healing following the controversial photo that was seen on social media posts last month.

The photo showed some students outside Hidden Oaks Middle School in Palm City holding up letters spelling out a racial slur.

Jimmy Smith, president of the NAACP of Martin County, said he has received face-to-face apologies from several parents.

Smith said the parents of some of those students involved told him they plan to attend the rally.
