Audrey Hepburn: The Secret WW2 History of a Dutch Resistance Spy – Den of Geek April 15, 2021 – Weirdness Wednesdays April 21, 2021

I saw this recently on Den of Geek – Audrey Hepburn: The Secret WW2 History of a Dutch Resistance Spy https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/audrey-hepburn-secret-ww2-history-dutch-resistance-spy/. Much longer article, but here’s a brief synopsis. I am honoring Audrey Hepburn with this post as she kept the information to herself while alive. I tend to include serious and silly posts for Weirdness Wednesday topics. I believe each serves a different purpose.

In stories of doomed World War II gallantry, little is as romanticized as Operation Market Garden. A technical failure by the Allied Powers to defeat the Nazis in 1944, this invasion of the Netherlands left British paratroopers stranded around a bridge in Arnhem, far too removed from their tanks to hold the line. Nevertheless, the bravery of those Airborne “Red Devils” has lived on in pop culture, as have the Dutch resistance fighters who sheltered them. What has been largely forgotten is that among those courageous souls was… a teenaged Audrey Hepburn? For about a week, in fact, the future movie star kept a Red Devil hidden in the cellar.Parts of the eastern and southern United States are about to witness a remarkable sight: billions of cicadas tunneling out from underground for the first time in 17 years to swarm outdoor spaces and share their loud collective mating calls.

This image, of wartorn tenacity, is hardly the type associated with Hepburn in the popular imagination. To this day, she’s remembered as the ultimate Givenchy girl, an ethereal presence who took her breakfasts at Tiffany’s, and always in a little black dress. Even when she was heartbreaking on screen, she was luminous—a woman who appeared to glide through a charmed, effervescent life.–snip–

Thought this was an unusual case where real life shows truth is truth is stranger than fiction and a great Weirdness Wednesday post.
