This is a promising new DNA technology that has been out for a bit: https://nanoporetech.com/. The device, minION – https://nanoporetech.com/portable-sequencing, is portable. Cost for the device starts at $1,000. Starter packs start at $4,900 including consumables. Here’s the store link: https://store.nanoporetech.com/us/.
It sounds like results can be available in a fairly short time. I am not seeing an estimate of how fast the machine can provide results. It does offer a solar power option for areas where lack of other power is not an option. A lot more information on the company’s website. Can be a bit to find specific information.
Here’s an early article: http://blog.booleanbiotech.com/nanopore_2016.html. Pretty good article that stays simple enough to read. The article mentions some disadvantages using the device. It’s an older article, 2016, but includes some updated information.
The company plans an IPO soon – https://www.genomeweb.com/business-news/oxford-nanopore-technologies-file-ipo-second-half-2021. Per the article: “
An announcement about the IPO plans posted on the nanopore sequencing firm’s website was unavailable to viewers in the US and other jurisdictions, and Oxford Nanopore declined to provide a copy of its announcement or additional comment”. I tried accessing the link and got a notice denied when choosing the United States for country. Here’s the direct link – https://nanoporetech.com/about-us/news/oxford-nanopore-notification-ipo-preparations – you have to click the more information and enter your country.
