In memory of my sister (technically half-sister) Lorraine on her birthday. It took over 30 years to find her as Mom misremembered some things and gave some wrong information. She was either stillborn or dead shortly after birth. I haven’t found a birth or death certificate for her. Some locations do not provide birth or death certificates for stillborn children. I checked today on FamilySearch before posting this post. No additional information found other than what I already knew from my research of Lorraine. From a genealogical perspective, I call her half-sister as that is how she was related to me. However, I go with Mom’s definition and call Lorraine my sister when not talking from a genealogical perspective.
I have two living half-sisters on my Dad’s side. I don’t know their names or when they were born. I also don’t know if they are still alive. I am hoping one or both of them will test. I realize that finding half-siblings doesn’t always turn out well. I go with hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
When I do DNA presentations, I always mention the possibility of finding half-siblings, full siblings, Not the Parent(s) Expected (NPE). Some parents never tell the children, or worse, lie to the children about things like being adopted or having a different mother and/or father.
