I regularly see people debating various issues on Facebook and other social media outlets. I am not talking politics although I see plenty of those posts from intolerant people on each side of the aisle. It can be genealogy, DNA, relationships, or any topic. It’s usually in groups more than on people’s Facebook wall. In general, I am more of a live and let live attitude person. The kind of person willing to agree to disagree respectfully than push an agenda. Unfortunately, some people want to cram their personal opinions down people’s throats. Some admins and moderators have no problem letting a few people get out of control.
It can go to the other extreme where you have some admins and moderators who have no problem stopping healthy debates. Groups can have no, few, or very restrictive rules. Many groups don’t allow links or only allow photos in certain posts. It doesn’t help when you have several groups with similar names, but significantly different rules. I sometimes check out the rules before posting or responding to a post for this reason. I don’t belong to any political groups as I see enough from both sides on my Facebook wall. I have an equal amount of friends from different political parties, ranging from the extreme far left to the extreme far right and people that fall in between those extremes.
I noticed it is often impossible to convince someone they are wrong when they are dead-set on their opinion. I try to see both sides of a disagreement even if I think one side is wrong for whatever reason. I learned a long time ago that I won’t change the belief no matter how hard I try to convince them otherwise.
