This isn’t surprising – ‘Anti-Facebook’ app MeWe sees surge in downloads amid Big Tech scrutiny: https://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/anti-facebook-mewe-download-surge-big-tech-scrutiny. Longer article, but here are some basics. I get tired of the privacy violations that have been raised by numerous groups, including the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) which fined them $5 billion and added some restrictions like an independent privacy committee that the CEO will have no power to control. Facebook also has a habit of selling our personal information to advertisers. I tend to limit what Facebook allows me to limit, but there are too many things I can’t fully limit on Facebook. I use Facebook as little as I can. Same for Twitter. I don’t do anything that requires Facebook or Twitter to check up on me. My posts on both sites tend to be politically neutral. I joined MeWe a long time ago, but I haven’t done anything with my account other than setting the basics up.
From the link:
MeWe, a social media app centered around data privacy, has seen a surge in downloads in recent weeks as Big Tech companies crack down on user content.
The app that calls itself the “anti-Facebook” added 2.5 million new users last week, bringing its total userbase to 16 million — 50% of which live outside the U.S., MeWe spokesperson David Westreich told Fox Business.
“People all over the world are leaving Facebook and Twitter in droves because they are fed up with the relentless privacy violations, surveillance capitalism, political bias, targeting, and newsfeed manipulation by these companies,” Westreich said. “MeWe solves these problems.”
