I mentioned in this post that Ancestry was discontinuing AncestryDNA Health tests – Ancestry Will Discontinue AncestryDNA Health Tests – January 15, 2021 . I later updated the post when it was reported they were ending them yesterday. My original thought was they would wait until they sold out of the Health kits. I had planned on waiting for a sale to update from AncestryDNA basic to Health as the savings for a sale were around $20.00. I had some spare money and prayed about it and decided to upgrade.

I saw this article, mentioned in the earlier post – Ancestry to Discontinue NGS-Based AncestryHealth Service: https://www.genomeweb.com/sequencing/ancestry-discontinue-ngs-based-ancestryhealth-service and it indicates they will stop selling AncestryDNA Health kits today and will support users through July 2021.

I still agree with my comment in that post:

“My problem with the various health kits offered by 23andMe, AncestryDNA, and MyHeritageDNA is they don’t test enough markers. With BRCA cancer markers, there are over 1,000 known markers, but none of these companies test all of those markers. The companies test a fraction of the known markers and give you results based on the markers they test. Ideally, they would test all the known markers which could significantly raise the price of the Health test. On the plus side, this would give you a more reasonable likelihood to determine if you are at risk of getting cancer or any other medical condition”.

It will be interesting to see if Ancestry later brings back the Health kit. They didn’t do a great job of pitching it when they introduced it or in the months since it was introduced.

They still offer the AncestryDNA Traits update which is $20.00 more than the basic kit. However, you can upgrade it for the same $20.00 if it’s offered in your area. In the same way, Ancestry never pushed the Traits upgrade or kit. I believe the Traits are included if you ordered the Health version or upgrade. I removed the Health kit from today’s DNA update posted today Current DNA Sales January 16, 2021.
