One of the problem with moving as many times as I have moved as an adult, combined with the moves made as a child, I have lost a lot of things in the moves – books, home videos, toys, personal items that can’t be replaced as they were sentimental in nature. Many of the items are no longer available outside of auction sites. The last time I moved from Wichita (late 1994), and later back to Wichita (mid-1998), I didn’t have a lot of money to move stuff. I had a ton of books I would have loved to move to Mississippi, but I gave them away or donated to places they could use the books. I shipped as much as I could afford to ship as I knew where I would be staying.
Coming back to Wichita was a different story. I flew and hoped my stuff would be safe until I could send for it. Sadly, a fire destroyed my stuff before I could have it sent. These days I rely on ebooks and camera phones to capture a lot of memories and to save space on moves. Back then, those weren’t an option. On book sites, I have about 3,000 ebooks acquired in the last 7+ years. If I move, they will be easy to transport as they stay on the book sites. In terms of furniture, I don’t have much and it will stay behind or get donated. That’s not counting other sites where I have 20,000+ ebooks saved.
I hope to move at least once more. Wichita winters can get cold, many winters are too cold for my thin blood. Ideally, I would like to become a snowbird where I spend summers in Wichita and winters in my home county. That may not happen, but it would be cool if I can achieve it. I don’t mind the hot Kansas summers as it’s a dry heat. I can handle the humid Mississippi summers if being a snowbird doesn’t work out.
The nice thing is with the Internet I am able to save things online that weren’t an option 20+ years ago. It’s why I have so many ebooks. It’s also why I have so many photos and other documents online.
