The U.S. Census is currently underway in homes across America, marking a once-a-decade event. The tradition of taking a census is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. Knowing how many people live in different counties is essential for fair distribution of funds and governmental representation. The first U.S. census took place in 1790.

MyHeritage offers access to the full set of U.S. census records from 1790 to 1940 — later censuses are still not available due to a 72-year privacy restriction. These records include 650 million names, and they constitute the single most important source of documentation for family history in the United States.

The census questions varied from year to year, but U.S. census records typically include the names of household members, their ages, places of birth, residences, occupations, and details on their immigration, citizenship, and military service among other details.

If you have family members who lived in the U.S. at any point, this collection is an invaluable resource that can teach you a lot about how your ancestors lived. Don’t miss your chance to peruse it for free! You have through April 12 to enjoy free, unlimited access.
