General Funston Boyhood Home and Museum, Iola – Kansas Tuesdays January 28, 2020

In continuing my northeast journey through Kansas, I saw Iola in Allen County, Kansas. My mother’s paternal line has some roots in the area with my great-grandmother, her sons, and my great-grandfather’s brother and his family living in this area at different points in time. As usual, I do my things to see and do in Iola and came across General Funston Boyhood Home and Museum – was not familiar with General Frederick “Fighting Fred” Funston and decided this would be a great Kansas Tuesdays post. He fought in the Spanish–American War and the Philippine–American War. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Philippine–American War. President Wilson considered him in early 1917 to lead any future American Expeditionary Force (AEF) should America join World War I, but the general died before the appointment was made.
