Well Done Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society – January 4, 2020

I am a life member of MHGS and was Board Secretary for a period a few years back.

I received my monthly newsletter from Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society (MHGS) a couple of days ago. Here’s the link to it on the MHGS website – http://mhgswichita.org/wp/2020/01/january-2020-alert-newsletter/. PDF is available on the link.

The biggest news was the completion of digitizing the marriage licenses the City of Wichita gave to the society. This was over 210,000 records in 150 books. That’s Phase I. Phase II is indexing each of the 150 books. That may take longer than scanning the 210,000 records took.  I don’t remember when the scanning project started, but the goal was to finish by the end of 2019. At its height, they were scanning 6 books/day. MHGS is only open two days/week, but I suspect at least one of the scanners came in towards the end when we were closed to finish up. The marriage records go from 1870 to 1984. These records are in addition to other marriage and divorce records – http://mhgswichita.org/wp/sedgwick-county-marriages-and-divorces/ MHGS acquired over the years.

If you need a copy of any records MHGS has, the cost can be found http://mhgswichita.org/wp/research-requests/

Research Requests

We operate the MHGS library with a small staff of volunteers, so we are limited in the amount of research we can do.  If you live in the Wichita area, or are visiting, we would love to see you at the library, which is open to the public for a small fee.

We can send copies of some of our records.  These records are indexed under the Online Resources menu.

  • Obituaries: $5 per name.
  • Marriage affidavits (1870 – 1941): $5 per name.
  • Probate file: $10 plus 25 cents per page. The number of pages is listed on the index.
  • Quiring Monument Purchase Orders: $5 per name.
  • Divorce file: $10 plus 25 cents per page.

MHGS volunteers can conduct limited research in our library.  The fee is $20/hour for non-members and $10/hour for members, with a minimum of 1 hour.  The fee includes 10 copies for every hour of research.  Additional copies are 25 cents per page.  We will contact you after 1 hour of research to report on our progress; at that time you may choose to terminate the research and get your copies or continue the research.

Requesting Research

We prefer to receive research requests by mail.  Please use our copies or research request forms.

Mail your request to:

Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society
P.O. Box 1121
Wichita KS 67201-1121

It can take up to four weeks to fulfill your request, so please be patient.
