Rest in peace John Moon, oldest known Iwo Jima survivor (1916 – 2019).
I saw this a few minutes ago on Legacy.com – http://www.legacy.com/news/celebrity-deaths/notable-deaths/article/john-moon-1916-2019-oldest-known-surviving-veteran-of as I working on a different post.
John Moon was believed to be the oldest known surviving veteran of Iwo Jima. He served in the Marine Corps 5th Division which saw heavy fighting against the Japanese Army on the island of Iwo Jima in 1945. He fought on the island for 13 days before being wounded. He helped another injured soldier make it to a rear aid station. He was then sent back to Hawaii to recover. He was 28 at the time of the battle.
Thank you for letting me know. He will be in Monday’s Farewell Salutes.

You are welcome. I was working on a post about obits and I checked Legacy.com where I noticed his obit and decided honoring him took precedence over the post I was working on. If you scroll down, there are several other WWII who passed this year. I already did a post on one of them and am working on posts for the other two.

They deserve the recognition. Legacy is where I get quite a few of the Farewell Salutes.

I agree.
Think there are a few younger ones still around from Iwo.
