This is how I do it for my blog. I am not suggesting this is how you should handle it for your blog or website. I use WordPress so I don’t know how Blogger/BlogSpot or other blog platforms handle the issue.
When I add links to a post, or include links in a quote, I set them to open in a new window/tab. Other bloggers and websites go with opening in the same window/tab. A small group go with a mix where some links open in a new tab, but other links redirect to the link. This includes many of the major genealogy websites that go this route where some links open in a new window/tab and others open in the same window/tab.
If you ever notice one of my post links not opening in a new window/tab, please let me know. I do my best to have them all open in a new window/tab. Occasionally, one slips through where I forgot to click the Open link in a new window/tab checkbox.
When I am visiting another blog or website on my laptop and it has one or more links, I always right-click on the link if it looks like something I want to check out and open it in a new tab. Once I am done reading the link, I close the new tab. I can’t easily do that on my phone so I click on the link. If it opens in a new tab, I close the tab once I am done reading it. If it redirects me from the site I was on, I either use the Back key or close the tab, depending on if I was done with the original site.
I’m using a mix. Same tab for internal links and new tab for external links. I have no clue if it is good, bad, or other wise but it’s what I’m doing.

My suggestion is to use what works for you. The problem with adopting someone else’s system is it may not work for you.
