I ran across the case of Eric Lundgren, https://www.polygon.com/windows/2018/4/25/17280178/eric-lundgren-windows-restore-disks-microsoft-prison, who went to jail for copyright infringement a while back. It’s rare, but it does happen. You are more likely to get sued for copyright violation as a civil matter which happens a lot more often than most people realize. It’s one reason I talk about copyright violation on a semi-regular basis. The cost for a civil infringement can be high, depending on how many violations are successfully charged against the individual.

You can read more about Eric Lundgren by doing a search on your favorite or least favorite search engine. Here’s a different take on Eric – http://nautil.us/issue/62/systems/is-this-man-the-elon-musk-of-e_waste
