John Dillinger’s Corpse to Be Dug Up and DNA-Tested to Settle Conspiracy Theory – LiveScience; DNA Saturdays August 3, 2019

As I was looking for a good DNA topic for today’s DNA Saturdays post, I went to LiveScience and started digging around (no pun intended) when I noticed this article John Dillinger’s Corpse to Be Dug Up and DNA-Tested to Settle Conspiracy Theory: https://www.livescience.com/66091-john-dillinger-corpse-exhumed-conspiracy-theory.html. It’s interesting because a few hours earlier at Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society, mhgswichita.org/wp/, this very topic was discussed.

From the article,

The body of infamous Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger — or, at least, the body of whoever is buried in Dillinger’s Indianapolis cemetery plot — is going to be exhumed, DNA-tested and reinterred on Sept. 16, cbsnews.com reported.

I would hope they would verify the body dug up as having the wounds in the same locations that Dillinger received in the shoot-out. It wouldn’t surprise me if it turns out not to be him as there were concerns grave robbers might steal the body. From the article, his grave was covered with 3 feet (0.9 meters) of concrete to prevent that from happening. On the off-chance grave robbers succeeded, did they replace the body? More importantly, did they replace it with another body that had wounds and injuries that match what was reported?

Personally, I think he was not the type that would have allowed his death to be faked without coming forward in some semi-obvious or possibly very obvious way and mocking and taunting the FBI for botching the job.

I will do a follow-up once the results are in, but that could be a while.

    • I need to follow up and see how it’s going. It can be a slow process. What would be a weird twist if he was originally buried there, and some grave robber switched out the body later just to mess with people.

I don’t see him being the type to remain silent if he wasn’t killed in the shoot-out. He seems like the type who would taunt law enforcement if he hadn’t been killed even if it meant risking getting caught or killed.

      • SLIMJIM says:

“He seems like the type who would taunt law enforcement if he hadn’t been killed even if it meant risking getting caught or killed.” I agree. Just seem that would fit the profile of the Public enemy gangster of that time period I think

      • I used to work for the IRS back in early to mid 1990s. Don’t know if the seminar is still being held, but we would really get taxpayers sending certified or registered form letters with a list of 35 people, ranging from the President, Secretary of the Treasury, down to the Mayor which they had also sent certified or registered letters.

We may not have known these people weren’t paying taxes had they not so willingly shared their names, addresses, and the braver ones included Social Security Numbers.

I mention seminar because the letters were form letters with the front having spaces for name, address, etc. I always wondered if the people running these seminars were actually doing the smart thing and paying taxes while explaining to the attendees why they didn’t have to pay taxes.
