Wichita Genealogical Society Records – Tombstone Tuesdays July 30, 2019

Wichita Genealogical Society (WGS) in Wichita, Kansas has a few databases related to death records, some are only available to members and others are available to the general public – https://wichitagensoc.org/cpage.php?pt=21.

Below is the list – I included those related to coroner records, death certificate and obituary indexes as well as things that aren’t directly death related. If it says Public, then anyone should be able to view the list. For Members, you would need to be a Member of WGS. I am not a member of WGS although I have been in the past.

Indexes and Databases
Who’s Who in Wichita  – Public

For 1955 and later obituaries, Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society (MHGS)http://mhgswichita.org/wp/ has those available for a fee. WGS is indexing the pre-1955 obituaries and has a good start on the indexing.  WGS is housed in the Wichita Public Library – http://www.wichitalibrary.org/ which has the old Wichita newspapers on microfilm.

NEW! Obituary Indexes 1939, 1941-45 & 1954

The Wichta Genealogical team led by Rosie Wiley has completed indexing all obituaries that appeared in the 1939, 1941 through 1945 & 1954 Wichita Morning Eagle. The index gives a date and page number in the paper where an obituary is found. Members, login and Click Here (Member Only link) to see the indexes and discover how you can get a copy of the obituary. More years are being indexed and will be available soon.

I am not seeing it visible on the public side of the site, but WGS had the Maben Funeral Home (Severy, Greenwood County, Kansas) records at one point. I think they were behind the Member Only section when I was a member. It’s a great tool if you have family members who were serviced by Maben Funeral Home. The funeral home closed in 1994. I found a partial list on World Cat, but you would need to be in Topeka to see a copy of the book: https://www.worldcat.org/search?q=su%3AJ.S.+Maben+Mortuary+%28Severy%2C+Kan.%29&qt=hot_subject.

WGS does a yearly conference in October (October 5, 2019 this year) – https://wichitagensoc.org/cpage.php?pt=67 and this year’s guest is Judy G. Russell, the Legal Genealogisthttps://www.legalgenealogist.com/.
