Great Cycle Challenge Update July 5, 2019

The Challenge ended June 30, 2019. Here is the final tally from the website:

$8,367,293 Raised
80,329 Riders
4,284,898 miles Ridden

I broke 126.0 miles of my 120 mile goal, https://greatcyclechallenge.com/Riders/PaulSmith1. I did not make the recommended $500 donation goal that the campaign set.

I learned a few things. Towards the mid-point, I started taking the long routes to get from Point A to Point B to make up for bike issues and rain days that limited my riding. I was not familiar with the partial donor match Wednesday early enough to generate interest in people donating. I will plan earlier and accordingly for next year. I will also share more on Facebook and Twitter to raise awareness as well as share weekly updates and milestones on my blog.

I plan on doing it again next year. I am in the process of adding this month’s rides, but wanted to wait until I had the numbers from June. I will be adding rides as I do them to see how things go. I added the rides for July that I hadn’t added.

For me, this is about the children fighting cancer more than it is about me reaching goals. If that means I get people to donate to other riders or become riders themselves, I see those as wins for the children.

Once I realized the challenge was really a crowdfunding/crowdsourcing campaign even though it’s not using any of the usual sites like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, GoFundMe, or any of the nonprofit crowdfunding sites, I can use that knowledge next year to see about ways to generate donors and riders.
