In my own adult life, I have seen the destructive psychological grip of intermittent reinforcement, although my reward was not the “win” of gambling. For me it was the crumbs of affection and validation from a terrifically emotionally abusive partner.

I don’t play PowerBall or MegaMillions; the odds of winning the big pay-out with either one are bad –

The main reason I don’t play either lottery is simple; the main place I could buy either ticket has a cash only rule. They made it sound like the state instituted such a change, but according to the state, they let lottery ticket outlets decide if it’s cash only or if you can use a debit or credit card to purchase lottery tickets. I rarely have cash (as in the green stuff; at least it’s mostly still green for the denominations I get).
