We’re proud to have recently been among the first recipients of the Unsung Heroes Award for outstanding work in preserving family history through our project digitizing cemeteries.
The Unsung Heroes Award is presented through a partnership between The Genealogy Guys Podcast and Vivid-Pix, and acknowledges and celebrates members of the genealogy community who lead the way in digitizing, indexing, and transcribing photographs and documents. The purpose of the award is to recognize the work of these preservationists in five categories: organizations, societies, individuals, young people, and posthumous. Award recipients will be announced on a quarterly basis.
At RootsTech 2019, we announced that after five years of dedicated efforts, we completed our goal of digitizing every cemetery in Israel, making it the first country in the world to have almost all of its gravestones preserved and searchable online, with images, locations, and fully transcribed records. It was an ambitious goal and one that had never before been attempted. Our unprecedented commitment to recording the past and preserving history for future generations was noticed, which is what prompted our designation for the award.
On Saturday, June 1, 2019, at the SCGS Jamboree Conference in Burbank, California, Drew Smith from The Genealogy Guys Podcast and Rick Voight, CEO of Vivid-Pix, announced MyHeritage as an award recipient. A commemorative plaque marking the occasion was presented to Daniel Horowitz, genealogy expert at MyHeritage.
In his speech, Drew Smith said:
MyHeritage has been involved with numerous pro bono projects over the years. We are here today to recognize the completion of their unprecedented five-year project to digitize every cemetery in Israel… MyHeritage embodies the true spirit of volunteerism, and this project is just one of its many mitzvahs, or good deeds, for the global community.
We are thrilled to have been recognized for this important initiative, which is truly worthy of celebration. We are committed to preserving valuable family history information for future generations, and we look forward to pursuing similar endeavors in the future.
