My choice for this week’s Weirdness Wednesdays is Miss Kangaroo 1952:
https://artsearch.nga.gov.au/Detail.cfm?IRN=275242&PICTAUS=TRUE (image has been removed and I couldn’t find it on the Wayback Machine). Incorrectly lists her as Miss Australia instead of Miss Kangaroo.
I haven’t found out what happened to Loretta North after being chosen as Miss Kangaroo 1952.
I have not seen the movie although there are some YouTube clips about the movie. IMDB rating is 5.6 (out of 10) with 213 people rating it. Amazon reviews give it 3.3 out of 5 stars, 11 reviewers.
From the little I found on the movie, it sounds like a Western version of Planet 9 from Outer Space – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plan_9_from_Outer_Space, considered by many to be the worst sci-fi movie ever made. Makes me want to watch it just to see if it’s that bad. It had some major celebrities in it and a good budget. According to this review – https://nothingiswrittenfilm.blogspot.com/2014/04/kangaroo-1952.html?view=flipcard,
Ads proclaimed Australia “the continent time forgot” (surely news to its eight million inhabitants) while early script drafts featured genocidal kangaroos slaughtering entire villages.
Kangaroo is a forgettable curio. Those fabled mass-murdering roos would have been much more interesting than the dull, derivative Outback Western we ultimately got.
