cut off one’s nose to spite one’s face , to create a disadvantage to oneself through one’s own spiteful action.

One of Mom’s favorite sayings was “Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.” If I had a penny for every time she said this, I would have a fair amount of money as she used it very often. I used to cringe as soon as she started saying it. It wasn’t usually directed at me as I tended to not do many things to earn the warning.

In hindsight, I later learned to appreciate the value of this saying. It saved me a lot of heartache. I have friends who know this saying, but willfully choose to ignore it. Some actually relish doing this even though they know the cost is going to far exceed the momentary enjoyment they get from doing it. Revenge is never worth the price you pay for it no matter how much you think otherwise.
