I had a couple of friends send me links on Plot twist: Mitochondrial DNA can come from both parents: https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/fathers-can-pass-mitochondrial-dna-to-children-65165, https://arstechnica.com/science/2018/11/plot-twist-mitochondrial-dna-can-come-from-both-parents/, https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/dads-also-pass-mitochondrial-dna-contrary-long-standing-belief-180970940/, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE9WnROTSQs (YouTube video), and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paternal_mtDNA_transmission.
In this section of the above Wikipedia article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paternal_mtDNA_transmission#In_humans, it sounds like it isn’t possible, but it is mentioned briefly if you dig towards the bottom of the link.
The biggest problem is that the vast majority of people haven’t done full mtDNA testing and only a relatively small percentage of people have done full mtDNA testing. FamilyTree DNA (FTDNA) doesn’t break down how many mtDNA records were full mtDNA results – https://www.familytreedna.com/why-ftdna.aspx, information as of February 25, 2019: 326,482 mtDNA records in the database.
