Maj. Richard “Dick” Sherman, last living member of Chennault’s Flying Tigers, passes away at 96

Rest in peace Major Richard “Dick” Sherman. He died January 9, 2019.

Maj. Richard Sherman, last living member of Chennault’s Flying Tigers, passes away at 96https://www.myarklamiss.com/news/local-news/maj-richard-sherman-last-living-member-of-channault-s-flying-tigers-passes-away-at-96/1694771710 (has a video which is also available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4uFzbFW5tY). I saw it posted on Facebook by the Army Air Corps Library and Museum on its page: https://www.facebook.com/pg/ArmyAirCorps/posts/?ref=page_internal. He didn’t fly the P-40 fighters that are traditionally associated with the Flying Tigers; he was a member of a B-25 bomber crew which is why he’s probably not on some lists as a Flying Tiger. At least part of his service was after the Flying Tigers were officially absorbed into the regular Army Air Corps. Additional information at https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2019/01/10/wwii-bombardier-in-flying-tigers-dies/ which indicates there is one surviving Flying Tiger, but doesn’t name the individual.  The article also mentions that Major Sherman was a founder of the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum: http://www.chennaultmuseum.org/.

In a 2016 article: https://www.thenewsstar.com/story/life/2016/07/23/richard-sherman-flying-tiger-recalls-events-wwii/87382418/, you can learn more about Major Sherman. A 2018 article: https://www.knoe.com/content/news/A-Flying-Tigers-Living-Legacy-485556621.html.

If you don’t live in the area, you can pay your respects on Find-A-Grave: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/195931868/richard-w_-sherman. BillionGraves cemetery location if you happen to be in the area: https://billiongraves.com/cemetery/Northeast-Louisiana-Veterans-Cemetery/315631 – (doesn’t look like a cemetery on the BillionGraves link, but if you put in GPS: 32.422393,-91.7630551 on Google Maps, it shows up).

He’s listed on the V. A.’s Grave Locator site: https://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/ – have to manually enter the information, but here’s what you get:
