Was Your Account Hacked?

It depends. In the case of Facebook, it most likely has been hacked, but not necessarily as often as some would have you believe. Been a while, but I saw an article several years ago where the average Facebook account was hacked every six (6) months if you have a decent password. Now, if you use of the 500 worst passwords https://gist.github.com/djaiss/4033452 to secure any of your accounts: Facebook Twitter, e-mail, etc., then you are probably hacked a lot more than twice a year.

If somebody is sending you a friend request or reports they received a friend request from you, it’s unlikely to be a hacking problem. In general, the hacker simply saved your profile photo, created a fake profile using your name and the saved profile photo because you can’t send a friend request to somebody who is already your friend. If somebody is sharing a video or other link to you on Facebook Messenger, it could be the account was hacked especially if it’s coming from their regular Facebook account and not some lame spoof account. I rarely send video links, and if I do, it tends to be YouTube videos. I try to let people know before sending a video link on Facebook Messenger. It’s also smart to add a note if you send a video or other link since most hackers don’t bother or use some cutesy phrase.
