Here is Renard’s Find-A-Grave memorial: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/191265528/renard-joseph-matthews I could have added Renard’s memorial on July 9th or earlier, but thought waiting a few weeks more was appropriate, and I expected somebody would add him sooner.
Unusual send-off, but interesting and nice to see the funeral home was willing to go the extra mile in helping the family achieve the send-off: https://wtvr.com/2018/07/09/new-orleans-family-has-sons-body-displayed-in-front-of-tv-at-wake/. You can learn more about Renard at https://wgno.com/2018/07/08/nola-family-chooses-unique-but-loving-way-to-say-goodbye-to-son/, http://obits.nola.com/obituaries/nola/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=189473318, and http://www.charbonnetfuneralhome.com/book-of-memories/3549480/Matthews-Renard/obituary.php. New Orleans family has son’s body displayed in front of TV at wake (below re-written to avoid copyright issues):
As mentioned by WGNO (a New Orleans TV station), the family chose to remember him a way fitting to his life.
He was sitting in a chair in the funeral home with a video game controller in one hand. He was surrounded by his favorite snacks (not mentioned in the article, but included Chocolate Chip Crunch cereal box, Barq’s Root Beer, Doritos chips, some sort of snack cakes. Also, the TV screen had a Boston Celtics game on it, which appears to be a video game.
His mother indicates he was a homebody and had only started to venture out shortly before his death. His mother had gotten him a dog and he would take it for walks. He was a huge fan of Celtics guard Kyrie Irving.
Renard Matthews was killed June 25, 2018. He was 18 years old.
