YSearch and MitoSearch to Close Down

As reported on the FamilyTree DNA (FTDNA) forum, http://forums.familytreedna.com/showthread.php?p=451722, both YSearch and MitoSearch are shutting down.

Ysearch and Mitosearch going out of business

Hello all,

I wanted to let you know that it looks like Ysearch and Mitosearch are finally going to be shut down. Management is aiming for the end of this month but the exact date has not been announced yet. I would recommend getting whatever data you may want off of it as soon as possible.

Family Tree DNA

You can (temporarily) read about YSearch at http://www.ysearch.org/. It has been saved a number of times to the Wayback Machine once the site is taken down.

You can learn more about MitoSearch at http://www.mitosearch.org/, and it has been saved several times on the Wayback Machine which will be a good place to see it after the site goes down.

Sad to see the two sites go down as they were one way to compare people who had tested at different places. It’s my hope that GEDmatch will take up the slack and at some point in the near future allow people to upload their mtDNA and Y-DNA results to GEDmatch. At present, GEDmatch only accepts autosomal results, but rumors have been floating around lately GEDmatch was looking at allowing mtDNA and Y-DNA uploads. Another option for Y-DNA is YFull if you did Big-Y at FTDNA or FGC’s Comprehensive Elite Y-DNA test. It costs $49 to upload your Y-DNA results to YFull. I believe it’s worth the $49 and would encourage anybody who has done Big Y or Comprehensive Elite or a similar Y-DNA test to upload to YFull. I uploaded to YFull when it was first offered and have been happy with results that YFull has given me.
