FamilyTreeDNA to Offer Limited Free Transfers from AncestryDNA and 23andMe; Full Transfer $39

Updated 16 October: Added new blog post covering the release: http://upsdownsfamilyhistory.com/2014/10/familytreedna-limited-free-autosomal-transfer-available-now

FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA) has announced limited free transfers from AncestryDNA and 23andMe. There is a major restriction. You will only get to see your Top 20 matches for free, but the matches will not see you as a match. If you like what you see, you can do a full transfer for $39. Normal transfer fee is $69 so this is a great deal and beats the earlier $49 sale prices in the past. From first reports, it will not cover 23andMe v4 chips due to compatibility issues. 23andMe switched to the v4 chip December 2013. They are offering the full transfer free if you recruit four others to transfer or pay for four others to transfer.

The sale is set to start next week, but no word on when it goes live. I will update as more information becomes available. It is unclear, but sounds like the $39 price may be the regular transfer price.
