UPDATE: offer was only available briefly and isn’t active as of 04 July 2014. You may want to check back occasionally and see if they are offering it again. They are offering the DNA kit for $49 (12 July 2014 – no indication on how long it will stay at this price).
Ancestry is offering a free autosomal DNA kit (normally $99, 4th of July Sale price $79) for new paid Ancestry.com subscriptions as long as you subscribe to one of their annual plans, starting at $14.99/month. You have to sign up through one of the links that shows the free AncestryDNA offer.
The biggest problem with this offer is its random appearance. I am not a paid subscriber and on my first check, the below offer showed up.
I did not sign up. I switched computers and the offer did not show up. I logged out and logged back in – still no offer. After six attempts on two computers, I had the above offer show up twice and not show up four times.
After switching to a third computer, I was offered version 2. Version 2 only offers the $14.99/month deal. If you are interested in the deal and aren’t a current paying subscriber to Ancestry.com, try try again until the offer shows up.
In one of my Facebook groups, a current subscriber managed to convince a Customer Service Representative (CSR) to get them to offer her the same deal. It took a lot of convincing on her part to get the deal. No guarantee another Ancestry CSR would make the same deal.
