Update: found newspaper article about his death.
Here’s the story behind the challenge if you want to participate. http://www.nostorytoosmall.com/52-ancestors-in-52-weeks. A recap of #52 Ancestors for Week 18 can be found here.
I don’t know much about Great-Grandfather Bush. He was born 17 August 1870 in Mississippi, most likely in Harrison County His parents were Levi (or Levy) and Adeline or Adelaide (Breland) Bush. When I started researching him this week, I was only aware of two siblings – Benjamin Franklin “Frank” and Elizabeth Bush, but I found his father’s obit and it mentions six children born to Levi and Adelaide. Unfortunately, it only mentions J. L. as the last surviving child and no names or initials for the other five children; working on trying to find the other siblings. Joseph first shows up in the 1880 federal census.
It shows Levy (age 54), Adeline (age 38), Elizabeth (age 13), Joseph L. (age 10), and Benjamin (age 7). The top arrow is for Ellen Richard(s), Joseph’s future wife.
As usual, no 1890 federal census information.
According to Harrison County, Mississippi District 1 court records, Joseph L. Bush married Ellen F. Richards on 27 December 1894. The ceremony was performed by D. J. Kittrell, Justice of the Peace.
In the 1900 census, Joseph L. Bush (age 30), Ellen F. Bush (age 26, his wife), Cora L. Bush (age 5; my grandmother); Dora A. Bush (age 3), and Abi Bush (age 9/12; listed as son and male, but was female).
In the 1910 federal census, Joseph L. (age 39), Ellen F. (age 35), Cora L. (age 14), Dora A. (age 12), Abi (age 10 and correctly listed as daughter), Joseph S. (age 7), and Charles L. (age 5).
In the 1920 federal census, Joseph is listed as widowed; Ellen died in 1917. Joseph L. Bush (age 49), Myrtle Bush (age 20; previously listed as Abi in the earlier two census records); Joseph S. Bush (age 17), and Charles L. Bush (age 15).
Joseph died 15 October 1927. He is buried next to his wife in Coalville Cemetery, Woolmarket, Harrison County, Mississippi. Find-A-Grave memorial is here and BillionGraves cemetery is here. Grandmother Cora is also buried nearby.
I found a copy of this news article about Joseph’s death after posting his story. It mentions his car somersaulted and he died of crushed skull. The article said he had sold charcoal for many years.
