Family Birthdays – Week of 05 February 2014

I received my weekly update from WikiTree for family birthdays.

This week includes

John Joseph Hartman (06 February 1919 – 11 August 1981; step-father). I took the photo of the headstone in January 2007 on my last trip to the area.

John Hartman HeadstoneMarriage information can be found here, Frank M. Casey, minister, performed the service on 05 April 1978 . John and my mother moved to Orange City, Florida in early June 1979 and stayed there for a year. They moved back to Mississippi sometime in 1980 and resided in Long Beach for a bit. They eventually moved back to Gulfport later in 1980. He died from complications of pneumonia in Gulfport three days after the Biloxi V.A. Hospital stated he did not have pneumonia. I found a World War II draft registration card showing his mother’s name as Mrs. John William Hartman and birth place of Pearl River, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. Her first name may have been Mahala based on 1940 federal census records. He served in World War II, but his recollections of it were clouded by a brain tumor. The tumor was found shortly before his death.

Jane Blamey (10 February 1682 – ?, 1st great grand-aunt of wife of 3rd great-grandfather) I don’t have a lot of information about Jane and much of it is third-party reporting. She was born in England.

Thomas Grandberry Dowdy, Jr. (12 February 1912 –  15 April 1961; step-son of great grand-aunt). Headstone shows 1911 as birth year. I found several  obit references and they show he died at sea. He was captain of a tug that sank during a storm. He was the last man off the tug and gave up his spot on the raft for a crewman. He chose a breech buoy, but his body was found washed up on shore and reported on 21 May. Headstone photo can be viewed at Find-A-Grave

Earl Francis or Francis Earl Kring (12 February 1887 – 28 February 1963, first cousin twice removed). Headstone has his name as Earl F. Kring – and He was born in Westerville, Franklin County, Ohio and died in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. He married Catherine Louise Mechwart on 06 June 1906 in Gahanna, Franklin, Ohio. His wife is buried next to him and two children are also buried in the same cemetery – Chester Earl Kring and Helen Francis Kring. Another daughter, Dorothy Louise Kring (20 October 2010 – ?) is missing but most likely deceased. I found a Dorothy Kring with the right birth date on the SSDI showing January 1986 death and obit for Dorothy Kring Nixon I think is probably the correct Dorothy.
